Impacted Area: Lyons between Oak Park and Waukegan

Trial Period: August 14, 2017 to February 14, 2018

As part of a regular review of traffic conditions around the village, and in response to complaints from area residents, it was determined that certain traffic signage on Lyons between Oak Park and Waukegan may no longer be appropriate or necessary.

Specifically, this involves mid-block stop signs on Lyons St. between Oak Park and Waukegan Rd.  The stop signs were originally put in place to protect a crosswalk that is used by school children to walk to Golf School.  It is apparent from complaints we have received that the stop signs are often ignored by motorists that fail to stop, probably because there is no cross traffic and very few pedestrians outside of school commuting hours.

A temporary regulation replacing the stop signs with signs requiring a stop when pedestrians are present is an appropriate first step to mitigate this problem.  The situation will be monitored and comments from area residents along with feedback from village staff will be reviewed at a later time to decide whether this should be made permanent.  Note that the Principal of Golf School has no objection to the change.

Municipal Code Section 5-1-4 authorizes the Police Chief to make this temporary regulation, with approval from the Village Administrator.  Village Administrator Czerwinski supports this request.  Therefore, for a period of 180 days, from August 14, 2017 to February 14, 2018, this regulation will be in effect at the location described above.
