Construction Notice - Golf Road Railroad Bridge |
|
|
Metra has scheduled the replacement of the Golf Road railroad bridge for June 15, 2009. The project is expected to be completed by July 2010. Metra owns the bridge and has hired an engineer (V3 Companies, Ltd.) to oversee construction and a contractor (James McHugh Construction Co.) to perform the work.
The Village expects additional traffic will use Central Avenue and Harms Road occasionally to avoid the segment of Golf Road between Harms Road and Waukegan Road. Golf Road will be reduced from four lanes to two lanes through the Metra railroad bridge while that bridge is being replaced. There will also be periods when Golf Road will be closed between Waukegan Road and Normandy Avenue. The State of Illinois is the permitting authority of Golf Road and determines what changes to the roadway configuration are allowed to occur. The Village recognizes Metra’s project will affect traffic traveling through parts of the Village and will monitor the effects and engage various techniques to reduce adverse effects.
Motorists may encounter congestion as they approach the intersection of Golf Road and Harms Road during normal peak travel periods in the morning and evening. They may use Harms Road and Central Avenue to get to Beckwith Road or Dempster Street to avoid delays. Traffic will not be encouraged to use Harms Road and Central Avenue, but both streets are part of a logical alternative route.
The Village cannot prohibit traffic from using Harms Road and Central Avenue, but will monitor traffic to maintain the safety of all road users. The Police Department will provide selective speed enforcement to maintain safety. Village staff will coordinate with Metra and Illinois Department of Transportation to minimize avoidable, adverse effects on traffic.
