West Nile Virus Prevention |
|
|
West Nile Virus, a mosquito borne disease, spread across the country over the last few years. We must continue to take precautions to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and to protect ourselves from being bitten by them. We would like to remind you of preventive measures.
REDUCE THE RISK OF BECOMING INFECTED
- It only takes a small amount of standing water to allow mosquitoes to breed. Eliminate standing water wherever it exists.
- Keep gutters in good repair and cleaned out to avoid water build-up.
- Keep weeds and grass cut short.
- Be sure screens on windows and doors are in good repair and tight fitting.
- Mosquito repellents containing 20-35% diethyl toluamide (DEET) or Picaridin can be very effective in preventing bites. Follow instructions carefully. Use of repellents is extremely important.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants whenever you are outdoors during times of mosquito activity. Avoid spending time outdoors at dawn, dusk and in the early evening.
