American Legion Post 134 Cancels Public Memorial Day Parade And Ceremonies

On Monday May 4, 2020 American Legion Post 134 informed the Village that it has officially cancelled the annual Memorial Day Parade as well as the associated public ceremonies.

Traditionally, the parade would leave the American Legion Memorial Civic Center at approximately 1:30 pm on the Sunday before Memorial Day (May 24, 2020). The parade would travel a short distance to the “Doughboy Statue” located at the Morton Grove Public Library (6140 Lincoln). Brief remarks from the Legion Commander, a keynote speaker and Morton Grove elected officials would be heard. Lastly, there would be a rifle salute followed by the laying of poppies and a wreath at the statue by the Post 134 Ladies Auxiliary. The parade would then resume and finish at the American Legion Post.

In recognition of the prohibition of public gatherings greater than 10 persons through the end of May 2020 by the governor, the leadership of the local veteran’s group has announced the cancellation of the public ceremonies.

Mayor DiMaria encourages all Morton Grove residents to remember the brave service members of our country and their ultimate sacrifice in order to ensure the freedom we enjoy today.
