Increased West Nile Virus Activity Alert

Increased West Nile Virus Activity Alert

North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) surveillance indicates historic infection rates among the mosquitoes that can transmit West Nile virus (WNV) within the area we serve. The Greater Chicagoland area is currently experiencing a period of intense WNv activity that we expect to continue for at least another two – three weeks.

In early July, we enhanced our larval control treatments to further reduce adult mosquito emergence. While our control efforts have kept the abundance of Culex mosquitoes low, the mosquitoes that are present are, unfortunately, more likely to be infected with WNv than in previous years.

The Potentially Life Saving Action You Can Take to Avoid Being Bitten by Mosquitoes.
It is with an abundance of caution that we implore you to use an EPA registered insect repellent when spending time outside - particularly during the next few weeks. Repellents containing the active ingredients Picaridin, DEET, IR3535 or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus have been tested and proven to be safe and effective. Please visit the EPA Interactive Repellent Guide on our website to help you choose the right repellent for you and your loved ones.

Additionally, wearing proper attire and eliminating or draining items that can hold stagnant water around your property will help to further reduce risk.

The NSMAD is here to help. Please use our Service Request form to initiate a Property Inspection, Report Standing Water (present for at least four days) or Biting Mosquito Activity. Our Field Technicians typically respond within 36 hours of a request.
