Letter to the Community from Mayor Janine Witko

Letter to the Community from Mayor Janine Witko

Dear Community Member,

As you know, the Village has been the subject of federal immigration enforcement activities multiple times recently.  Many people in Morton Grove have shared that they are scared and terrified right now and I am saddened to see members of our community impacted.

My goal as Mayor is to make sure that we have a safe and open Morton Grove for everyone.  To this end, I want to share what resources are available to those in need and our commitment to adhering to the law.

Community Resources

The State of Illinois Attorney General’s Office has developed comprehensive guides to help community members.  Those guides and additional information to help you know your rights are available at the Attorney General’s Website here – Immigration Rights and are linked below:

These resources are vital and important to help everyone to know and understand their rights.

Morton Grove Policy

The Village does not participate in civil Immigration Enforcement.  We adhere to State Laws like the TRUST Act which provides guidance on immigration enforcement and the Voices of Immigrant Communities Empowering Survivors (VOICES) Act which provides protections for immigrants victimized by violent crime or human trafficking who have assisted law enforcement in investigating or prosecuting certain types of crimes.  Our Police will never inquire about someone’s immigration status.  If you or anyone is in fear of their safety, please call 9-1-1 immediately.

Our driving force is to provide a safe place for all of our community members who call Morton Grove home.

Sincerely,

Janine Witko
Mayor
