Oakton Street & Edens Expressway Bridge Replacement Project

In March 2024, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will begin a phased replacement of the Oakton Street bridge over the Edens Expressway, which was constructed in 1950. IDOT is working closely with Niles West High School and the Villages of Morton Grove and Skokie to address and mitigate impacts to the community during the period of construction. The project is estimated to be completed in Fall 2025.

IDOT plans to maintain two Oakton Street lanes open at all times to allow two-way traffic through the project area for the duration of construction. However, lanes widths will be constrained, and delays should be expected. The sidewalk will be maintained on one side of the bridge at all times for pedestrians and cyclists. The area of work will extend along Oakton Street from Menard Avenue to Gross Point Road. Frontage Road traffic is scheduled to be restricted for three of four stages. The intersection of Frontage Road and Oakton Street will be reduced from full access to right-in and right-out (i.e. eastbound to northbound and southbound to westbound). Night work will occur on the Edens Expressway, with lane closures expected for beam erection.

In addition to full bridge and roadway replacement, the $11.8 million project will include a new ten-foot-wide shared-use path on the south side of Oakton Street, a new staircase from Niles West High School to the shared-use path, new accessibility improvements, and enhanced pedestrian protections along Oakton Street.

Motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be on the alert for workers and equipment. The Village will continue to share updates relating to the project as they become available. If you have any immediate questions, please contact the Public Works Department at 847-470-5235.
