Lincoln Avenue between Menard Avenue and Central Avenue has been reconfigured to have one lane in each direction instead of two. Many people over many years have contacted the Village with concerns about intersections on Lincoln they consider to be dangerous. The changes are a low-cost safety improvement, an incremental step, to address traffic safety concerns for side street traffic and pedestrians who find it challenging to enter or cross Lincoln Avenue. The changes are intended to have a calming effect on traffic by eliminating high speed passing/merging maneuvers and by shortening the length of travel lane(s) to cross to enter or cross Lincoln Avenue. Village staff will monitor changes to traffic to evaluate the effects of the new configuration.
Lincoln Avenue drivers should only drive in the travel lane. It may be tempting to driver to the right of a left turning vehicle, but you should not leave the travel lane. It may also be tempting to drive on the shoulder to turn right on a side street, but you should not leave the travel lane. Doing so contributes to the challenges of side street traffic and pedestrians at Lincoln Avenue. Please be patient, courteous and follow the rules of the road.
