Village of Morton Grove Suspends Senior Programming

The Village of Morton Grove continues to monitor the public health risk of the coronavirus (COVID 19). Information regarding the local situation is received from the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPC), the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). These agencies, and the Village’s senior programming administrator Mather, have confirmed that persons age 65 and older are at increased risk to the adverse effects of the virus.

As of Friday, March 13, all senior programming offered by Mather at the Morton Grove Civic Center (6140 Dempster) will be suspended until further notice. Notices of the suspension of these services will be posted on the Village’s website, the local cable access channel as well as through other Village communications. This decision follows the advice of Mather and mirrors actions taken this week by the City of Chicago, Northshore Senior Center, Niles Senior Center and the City of Highland Park.

The Civic Center will remain open during regular business hours, however the prescription drug drop off and “sharps” disposal programs will also be temporarily suspended. Please note that this suspension of senior programming DOES NOT affect contracted room rentals within the Civic Center.

Morton Grove Mayor Dan DiMaria stated that, “This action is precautionary and consistent with recommendations from the CDC, IDPH, the Cook County Department of Public Health and Mather.” He added that, “The overall risk to residents in Morton Grove remains low at this time. This action is intended to decrease the risk of exposure to our valued senior population. The Village will continue to collaborate with community partners such as Mather and other locally based organizations in order to effectively respond to any changes in the situation.”

Lacking any specific localized threat, residents are encouraged to follow the below general guidance to reduce the likelihood of airborne transmission of any respiratory disease:

  • Wash your hands, often, with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • If you or a family member is sick, stay home and limit contact with others
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
